2 Effective Ways of Acquiring Land for Aquaculture

I discuss 2 Effective Ways of Acquiring Land for Aquaculture. While the promotion of aquaculture was prioritized for the small-scale sector through interventionist methods and to boost household fish consumption and food and nutrition security, new approaches today recognize the growing importance of promoting aquaculture as an enterprise. It is believed that pursuing aquaculture as a business would enable farmers to sustainably manage their systems for increased incomes. The first step in venturing into fish farming is the acquisition of land, how can this be done?

2 Effective Ways of Acquiring Land for Aquaculture

Land for Aquaculture

To begin with, there is no specific land that is meant for aquaculture but one can venture into fish farming on any piece of land whether it be one for intended for building or any other agricultural activities. The only thing that you will need to consider after acquiring land is a source of water and this is not a major challenge as you can use water from bore holes and any other available sources.

What is Involved in Aquaculture

Before you venture into fish farming there is need to get adequate knowledge of the industry, today we find that there to many fish farmers complaining about doing fish farming but not realizing some profit and in most cases this has been attributed to the lack of knowledge because most farmers decided to go into this industry blindly and in the end they end up getting swindled.

In order to acquire this knowledge, one can approach government professionals from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries. One may consult with them on the requirements and get the adequate advice on how to start aquaculture.

Your Focus as You Seek to Acquire Land

Your focus as you seek to acquire land for fish farming should not be on finding land with all the requirements to sustain fish farming (water, ponds etc.)

As long as you have the land, your fish farming project can kick start as they are many ways of sustaining this project, like I mentioned earlier the, you can still get a bore hole installed for your source of water and have the pond made on a piece of land that you have acquired.

Methods of Acquiring Land

To get land for aquaculture, there basically to methods:

  • Traditional Leaders (Chiefs and village headmen)

This is the most common method and it usually it doesn’t require one to have a lot of money to acquire land because it is traditional land. In some cases, this land may be given to a farmer for free as most chiefs would be very happy to give land to an individual that wants to bring forth a developmental project that will benefit the people around.

  • Local Authorities

This refers to institutions like the councils.

Government Programs for Aquaculture

Government through the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) is offering a startup fund for individuals intending to venture in to fish farming. People can apply for these loans or grants. There also various Non-governmental organizations that are involved in such programs too.

CEEC Requirements

There specific requirements that are needed in order for one to be considered for these funds. This therefore entails that based on one’s application farmers can succeed or fail in this endeavor.

To learn of the requirement, you need to keep an eye out for the adverts and the application form and take a keen interest in finding out what is needed. In most cases though the general requirement will be a business plan. Your business plan should be able to show that you know what you intend to do and that what is contained in the document is very much applicable and will generate profits.

If you have no idea on how to write a business plan, seek professional advice on how to do so and draft out a good business plan that you will eventually submit for review and hopefully get the funds you need.
