Pay-Yourself-First Budgeting Tool (Excel)
Most budgets work backwards: spend first, save whatever is left — which is usually nothing. This free tool flips that order using the "pay yourself first" principle: you set aside a fixed percentage of your income for savings and investing the moment it arrives, before rent, airtime or groceries get a share.
Built for the Zambian household, the workbook includes:
- A Pay-Yourself-First rate you control (defaults to a realistic 20%, split between an emergency fund and investments)
- Zambia-relevant expense categories — school fees, ZESCO, family support ("black tax"), church giving, transport and more
- Automatic totals, a surplus/deficit check, and an on-track status indicator
- A 12-month tracker with a savings-rate trend chart, so you can see your progress over the year
Once you know how much you're paying yourself first, put it to work: use the auction calendars and calculators in the Act section of our Financial Resource Hub to invest it in Treasury Bills, Bonds or Unit Trusts.
This tool is provided free for general financial education and does not constitute personalised financial advice.
